What is the All-Star Tournament?

The Little League Tournament takes place once the regular Little League season has concluded. This is a highly selective program with the most talented and experienced players in WSLL making up the rosters for the three teams that will enter the district tournaments to represent our league. Teams will compete against other District 9 All-Star teams with the winner advancing to the Virginia state tournament. The winner of the state tournament advances to the regional tournament. At the highest age level, the winner of the regional tournament advances to the Little League World Series held in Williamsport, PA.

What is the Time & Financial Commitment?

Participation on an All-Star team can be the highlight of your ballplayer’s Little League career. Families should consider that participation in All-Stars requires a significant time and financial commitment. The program begins with an intense training regimen that can last two or more weeks in preparation for the tournament against the best teams from the leagues in our district. Practices may be held every day during this time and may last up to 3+ hours per day. Players are expected to attend all practices and games. The teams are led by some of WSLL’s best coaches and will compete in the Virginia District 9 tournament. If a team wins the District 9 tournament, they advance to the Virginia State Tournament and possibly beyond.

While it is an honor to be selected to an All-Star team, a substantial commitment of time and effort on the part of players and parents is expected. In addition to practices, there are team dinners and other team building events in which players are expected to participate. Families are expected to coordinate and pay for at least one team dinner each and to fulfill volunteer roles for their teams, including team parent, scorekeeper, practice coaches, field preparation and more.

Please note and discuss with your player that All-Star tournament player participation differs from the regular season. The difference in playing time in All-Stars may be significant and difficult to handle for some players/parents. The only participation requirement is that a player be placed in the continuous batting lineup. Please be aware of this as it does differ from the regular season.

There is a one-time player participation fee for all players rostered to an All-Star team. This includes uniform costs, with the exception of game pants, which must be purchased based on your team’s requirements. There will be additional costs that will be determined by each team (including, but not limited to, batting helmets, bag tags, car magnets, and water bottles). Should your team advance beyond the D9 tournament, there will be additional charges, such as meals and hotel expenses. If the team advances past the D9 tournament, WSLL will pay a portion of these costs.

It is WSLL policy that no player will be denied participation based on the ability to pay – scholarships are available

How Do I Register to Be Considered for a Team?

In order to be considered for the 8/9/10, 9/10/11, and/or 10/11/12, All-Star tournament teams, players and parents must complete a commitment form. There is no cost associated with submitting a commitment form. You will only pay the All-Star participation fee if you are selected and accept a spot on one of the All-Star teams. The player commitment form is made available near the mid-point of each spring season, typically in late April, and remains open for roughly 2 weeks.

Once the commitment period opens, log into your account with the same credentials used to register for the current spring season. Eligible players will see an available program for which they can register. Commitments must be submitted by the communicated closing date. There will be NO extension of the deadline by which to signify your willingness to participate in All-Stars.

If you do not submit a commitment form for your player, then he/she will not be considered for selection to an All-Star team. Once you complete the commitment form within the registration system, you will receive an email confirmation. This is your proof of submitting your commitment form. Please retain it for your records.

Although Little League permits league age 8 players to participate on 8/9/10 teams, the pool of league age 9 and league age 10 players in WSLL has traditionally been sufficient to fill the 8/9/10 team roster and no league age 8 player has been selected in the past. Therefore, our system is not set to allow commitments from league age 8 players.

What is the Tournament Season Schedule?

Practices will begin in early June. You can expect practices most days of the week for up to three hours per practice in addition to team social activities and team dinners.

Games at the district level typically begin around the 3rd week of June and last for a little less then 2 weeks. The host league changes each year with different D9 leagues hosting the different age divisions. The final schedule for the district tournament is released in mid-May once teams are confirmed.

If a team wins the district, they advance to the Virginia state tournament. The location of the state tournament changes annually and varies by age division. Some years the tournament might be in a neighboring district while other years families might have to drive across the state to attend games. The state tournament begins in early to mid July and runs for a little less than 2 weeks.

The winner of the state tournament advances to the regional tournament with games starting in mid to late July. At the 10/11/12 division, the winner of the regional tournament advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.

Players who make an All-Star team are expected to participate in all practices and games, regardless of how far the team advances.

What is the Team Formation Process at each Division?

The All-Star team rosters are formed using the following selection process:

  • 10/11/12 Team: All-Star player selection is conducted via voting by players, managers, and coaches within the Majors division. Only League Age 12 players can appear on the ballot for player/coach voting. The remaining roster slots are selected by the All-Star manager.

  • 8/9/10 & 9/10/11: selections are made by a scout committee, as well as the respective All-Star managers. The All-Star scout committee is composed of Board of Directors members.

Any Majors or AAA player that is at least league age 9 is a possible candidate for the WSLL All-Star teams. Players that qualify for multiple league age teams are invited to check the applicable boxes on the commitment form to indicate they are open to playing at a higher level. Otherwise, they will only be considered for the youngest age division of which they are eligible.

If you commit your player to be considered for an older age group and your player is selected for the team in that older age group, your player may NOT then request to be moved down to a lower age group. For example, if you commit your League Age 11 player to player to play on either the 10/11/12 or 9/10/11 team and he/she is selected for the 10/11/12 team, he/she will NOT be considered by the officials responsible for selecting the 9/10/11 team and may not then request to be moved to the 9/10/11 team.
